8 Bizarre British Basement Ideas

We simply cannot get enough of basement conversion projects.

And if you are planning one we’ve got a few oddities for you to chew on.

After you go through this blog post you will have a better idea on what to have or not to have in your new basement!

They are both fun and tremendously rewarding, and it seems just about everybody is doing one these days.

We have seen so many amazing projects completed… but sometimes people just go that step too far…

Here is our roundup of some of the weirdest and wackiest basements from around the UK to inspire your own project (or perhaps not!)

 1. Lazy Bones

OK …so this is more about what you might find in your basement, but this is way too creepy not to be included in this list!

During restoration works to an abandoned orphanage in London, builders found a sealed basement which contained a vast collection of creepy and incredibly odd ‘skeletons’, supposedly belonging to mysterious and mythical creatures.

Nobody knows for sure where they came from and the story of the buildings benefactor is equally intriguing. It just goes to show, you never know what could be lurking down there in the darkness..!

2. Let’s Not Fallout

bizarre basement

Here’s one for the gaming geeks out there. This guy loved playing Fallout so much he built a replica bunker in his basement!

The vault door is impressive and fully functional, should you wish to completely seal yourself off from the outside world for a while.

Nuclear apocalypse aside, this would be useful for soundproofing a home music studio or for grabbing some much needed peace and quiet once in a while! You may want to pack some tinned food and a few pot noodles first though.

3. The Wipe Clean Basement

Now this one is just plain weird.

Here we have a one bedroom basement flat in East London that has been completely tiled throughout in tasteful blue tiles.

If you can ignore the feeling that you are permanently residing in the gents toilets at Waterloo station, this basement comes with the added benefit of being completely wipe clean. No more pesky vacuuming!

4. Ascend To The Throne

Some people assign importance to the strangest things.

The owners of this window-less basement flat in London (what is it about London?!), value their time on the loo so much that they have given the toilet its own special staircase.

5. A Very British Problem

bizarre basement

Another of those ‘look what i found in the basement’ stories, this time an unexploded WW2 german incendiary bomb.

While finding a bomb in your basement is itself a little unusual, it is this family’s response to the find that is the most bizarre. Rather than have the neighbours evacuated in the middle of the night, while the bomb disposal guys do their thing, this couple thought it best to simply wait till the morning..

Sounds logical right?..after all the bomb wasn’t going anywhere.. oh, they also thought it was a good idea to pick the bomb up and move it into the back garden for safe keeping!

6. The Vault

bizarre basement

Now this one I like.

Imagine if you lived in this terraced house – it would be like ‘Coronation Street’ upstairs, but ‘Caligula‘ downstairs!

The previous owner of this modest two-bed terrace in Bridgnorth, Shropshire – himself a renowned artist – had converted the basement in palatial style, complete with vaulted ceilings and ornate stonework.

The result is more ‘Game of Thrones’ than ‘Grand Designs’ and not a pool table in sight! I do wonder how practical this space would be, and indeed what you would ever use it for but I have to admire the years of dedication that went into creating it.

7. Arcade

bizarre basement

Im showing my age.

I am myself a child of the ‘80s and I have fond memories of my childhood.. but that doesn’t necessarily mean I want to go back there! The owner of this basement  apartment clearly felt differently.

What started as wave of irresistible nostalgia, quickly became an obsession – leading him to spend over £20k converting his bedroom into a fully functional, 1980s video game arcade.

You do have to admire the guys attention to detail though, right down to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle bedspread he now sleeps under since his fiancee left him (!).

8. Human Hair Stair…!

bizarre basement

As always I have saved the best till last.

Wondering what to do with all that annoying excess hair-stuff that keeps growing out of your head? Well here is the perfect solution – why not carpet your basement stair with it?!

Just think.. its warm under foot, looks great and the best part is its completely free!

Thankfully, this is actually an ‘art’ installation in an abandoned Arkansas hotel but it still makes my skin crawl.
